While traditional training avenues are valuable, consider this: Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions offer a dynamic and immersive learning experience that can propel your DF skills to the next level.

Hi, my name is Alayna Cash with Hexordia. This is my third year as a co-author of the Magnet Virtual Summit Capture the Flag (CTF). In addition to co-authoring the Magnet Virtual Summit CTF, I have also had the opportunity to compete in the Northeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NECCDC) in 2022 and 2023 on Champlain College’s Blue Team. These events have been an incredible learning opportunity, and I wanted to share from my perspective why I think there is so much value in playing a CTF! 

Learning

CTF competitions foster an environment for continuous learning opportunities with a dynamic nature that encourages both exploration and experimentation. With every new question, participants must modify the methods they use to get the flags since they will be exposed to new technologies and strategies. Participants will have the opportunity to hone in on a variety of investigative techniques utilized in the field of digital forensics (DF). Under time constraints, skills like file carving, cryptography, and other DF analysis techniques will be put to the test, including time management and problem solving abilities.

Practical Experience

During a CTF, a competitor will come across complex puzzles and challenges that will require critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving skills. Some questions may even encourage a participant to try new tools and techniques. However, learning to approach problems from multiple perspectives and develop strategies to overcome these obstacles is all part of the fun. Since CTFs often simulate real-world scenarios encountered in the field, being a part of the competition will provide participants with the practical experience often used by professionals on a daily occurrence.

Resume Building

As a student, I am always looking for opportunities to enhance skills taught in a classroom, network within the DF community, and participate in experiences to build my resume. CTFs are a perfect way to demonstrate practical skills to potential employers as well as simply practicing old skills that may not have been used recently. Since CTFs are often open to participants of all skill levels, it is a great opportunity to practice classroom topics and test old skills while being a part of a friendly competitive environment.

Building Community

These Capture the Flag competitions allow participants to connect with like-minded individuals. The CTF community often thrives on collaboration and mentorship making this the perfect environment conducive to learning and growth. CTF events bring together professionals from various backgrounds, including law enforcement, cybersecurity, academia, DF, and more. Engaging in these events allows participants to connect with experts and peers in the field while building professional relationships in a welcoming environment of friendly competition.
